Sven Botman has posted a positive injury update to social media following nine weeks on the sidelines.

The Dutchman hasn't featured for Newcastle United since scoring his first goal for the club during their 8-0 win over Sheffield United.

The Dutchman still has a little longer to go in his recovery from a knee injury. Botman hasn’t featured for the club since the win over Sheffield United and will miss the clash against Everton. But it looks like things are turning around. The 23-year-old's knee injury has been surrounded by a bit of mystery, with Eddie Howe not going into too much detail. However it appears Botman has avoided surgery after fears he would need it and be faced with a longer spell out.

The Athletic claimed the defender will resume training this week after Howe revealed before the Manchester United game he was heading in the right direction.

Speaking on Friday, Howe said: “He’s not training with us at the moment. He’s building up very slowly, he’s building up his load to make sure we don’t hit the knee with too much.

"At the moment, it’s reacting well with the work that he’s doing. We hope that continues and he’s such a big player for us. We’d love to get him back.”

And now Botman has provided an update himself. Posting to his Instagram story, he shared a photo of him celebrating his first Toon goal with the caption: "Last few steps."

However, it's unlikely the centre-back will be available for United's mid-week match against Everton (Thursday 19:45 kick-off.)

Newcastle are currently without a whopping 11 players thanks to injury. Sean Longstaff teased his return to Howe's side after his team beat Manchester United, taking to social media to write: "What a performance from the lads. Hope you enjoyed your weekend Mags and full focus now on Thursday!"
