Sven Botman showed his frustration when Newcastle United conceded late on against Southampton. The 22-year-old was on course for his seventh clean of the campaign until Roman Perraud breached the Magpies defence.

Eddie Howe’s side had to remain patient before breaking the deadlock at St Mary’s through Miguel Almiron on 35 minutes. Chris Wood and Joe Willock then scored quick-fire goals to put United 3-0 up just after the hour-mark.

Kieran Trippier’s withdrawal with 10 minutes to go appeared to disrupt United a little after Elliot Anderson was caught out defensively, which allowed Perraud to easily cut inside of Dan Burn and grab a consolation for the Saints.

Bruno Guimaraes swiftly restored United’s three-goal advantage but that wouldn’t have provided any comfort for Botman, who swung his arms up in the air and jumped on the spot when the home side got on the scoresheet.

Indeed, it was similar to the reaction Botman had at Fulham in October when Bobby Decordova-Reid also netted a late consolation. That, a clear indication of the high standards the £35million summer signing and his teammates have set.

“Whenever you concede a goal, that has to be the reaction otherwise that’s a dangerous mentality to have if you accept that. I think there was a feeling that we were disappointed but we’ll look back at analyse it,” Howe said.

“Defensively again today, I thought the back four and goalkeeper were the standout of the team. We weren’t using the ball particularly effectively today and came under a lot of transition problems and I thought the back four dealt with that very well.”

That new-found mentality that Howe and his coaching staff has instilled at Newcastle has the club third in the Premier League table with just one defeat this season. Furthermore, a run of nine games unbeaten and four successive wins has already guaranteed that the Magpies will stay in the Champions League spots during the World Cup break.

“Don’t get me wrong, I will probably see it (the league table) but I don’t tend analyse it and focus on it too much,” Howe said. “It’s not really important at this stage of the season. What’s important for me is that we turn up against Crystal Palace and try and win the game.”
