Newcastle United supporters face an anxious wait to discover whether they will face further disruption to their Premier League fixture list after details of King Charles III’s coronation were confirmed on Tuesday afternoon.

The Magpies have already embarked on a unique season with the Premier League set to take a six-week break when the World Cup Finals kick off in Qatar in November. United’s hectic fixture schedule has already been further condensed when their visit to West Ham United was postponed as a mark of respect for Queen Elizabeth II following her passing in September.

The coronation of her successor could impact on several Premier League fixtures after it was confirmed it would take place on the first weekend of May, rather than the speculated date just over one month later.

A statement released on Tuesday afternoon confirmed details of King Charles’ coronation, saying: “Buckingham Palace is pleased to announce that the coronation of His Majesty The King will take place on Saturday 6th May 2023.

“The coronation ceremony will take place at Westminster Abbey, London, and will be conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury.  The ceremony will see His Majesty King Charles III crowned alongside the Queen Consort. The coronation will reflect the monarch’s role today and look towards the future, while being rooted in longstanding traditions and pageantry.”

The Athletic have reported the UK government are to hold talks with the Premier League over the next few weeks as they look to make a decision over fixtures set to be held on the same day.  Policing requirements in the capital will put Fulham’s home game against Leicester City, Manchester United’s trip to West Ham United and the London derby between Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace at risk of postponement.

But the decision to hold the ceremony on a Saturday could see fixtures around the country moved to another date, meaning Magpies supporters will face a wait before a call is made over the scheduled home game with Arsenal.

Premier League fixtures scheduled for Saturday 6th May: Bournemouth vs Chelsea, Brighton and Hove Albion vs Everton, Fulham vs Leicester City, Liverpool vs Brentford, Manchester City vs Leeds United, Newcastle United vs Arsenal, Nottingham Forest vs Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur vs Crystal Palace, West Ham United vs Manchester United, Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Aston Villa
