A statement released by the the Svenska Fotbollförbundet (Swedish football association) explained: “Alexander Isak missed Wednesday’s training due to a bruise.

“On Wednesday evening, Alexander was examined by, among others, our medical team and it was established that he will not be available for games against either Serbia or Slovenia. Alexander will therefore leave the squad.”

Isak will return to Tyneside to be assessed and United will hope the striker is able to recover in time to play some part in next weekend’s visit to Fulham.

The former Real Sociedad star has made a promising start to life in the Premier League after scoring two goals in his opening three games for Eddie Howe’s side.

That has not gone unnoticed by his international team-mates, who described their disappointment at the injury suffered by the Magpies striker.

Winger Viktor Claesson told Swedish outlet Hallands Nyheter: “We are losing a very good player, who has done well at the start of the Premier League.

“It’s clear we wanted him with us, but it’s also something you’re used to as a footballer. There will be injuries. I have no doubt that we have replacements.”

Sweden team-mate Mattias Svanberg added: “There is much lost, above all the quality of being able to make a difference on your own.

“We saw him in his first game against Liverpool, how he single-handedly scored a goal, which admittedly was ruled out for offside.

“Being able to stand for those actions against world (class) players, that’s a pretty good quality. And we are losing it.”
