The Magpies hierarchy remain active as they look to add to their squad in the summer and a number of potential signings are current in the final months of their contracts with their current clubs.

NewcastleWorld assesses ten different options that could be added to Eddie Howe’s squad if the Magpies are successful in their battle to avoid relegation.

Jesse Lingard

Could it be a case of fourth-time lucky for the Magpies if they choose to make a summer move for Manchester United and England star Jesse Lingard.

Two unsuccessful loan offers were submitted during the first three weeks of the January transfer window and a third deadline day bid was rebuffed by the Red Devils.

Lingard is sure to cut a frustrated figure at Old Trafford after seeing a clear route to regular first-team football denied by his boyhood club.

It now seems highly unlikely he will extend his current contract and he will make a first permanent move of his career when his deal expires in the summer.

He will be without potential suitors and Newcastle will have to be decisive if they are to see of competition from Premier League duo West Ham United and Spurs, as well as a number of clubs around Europe.

Niklas Sule

Bayern Munich defender Niklas Sule has been linked with a move to Tyneside ever since the PIF-led takeover of the club in October.

The powerful centre-back is understood to be of interest to Newcastle and was receptive to a move to the Premier League.

Sule recently rejected a final contract offer from the Bundesliga champions and SportsBild have reported he has already made up his mind to depart when his contract expires in June.

Chelsea, Spurs and Barcelona are all monitoring the situation and it seems Newcastle made have to go above and beyond if they are to complete a move for the German international.

Boubacar Kamara

Marseille star Boubacar Kamara is another player that has featured in discussions at St James Park.

Filed in the 'unlikely' category as soon as his name emerged in the papers. The France Under-21 international looks set to depart the Stade Velodrome when his current deal expires at the end of the season and will not be short of options.

With an ability to play as a holding midfielder and at centre-back, Kamara would offer Eddie Howe a solid and dependable option in either role.

He has come under the gaze of United’s head of recruitment Steve Nickson and it would not be a shock to see the Magpies make a summer move for the 22-year-old.

Manchester United and Chelsea have also shown an interest in Kamara.

James Tarkowski

Perhaps predictably, given his previous relationship with Eddie Howe, Burnley defender James Tarkowski has been linked with a move to Tyneside ever since the former Clarets manager took the reigns at St James Park.

Tarkowski was one of the first names to be linked after the takeover. A deal was always going to prove difficult, even more so after Newcastle activated Chris Wood’s £25miliion release clause to rub salt into Burnley's wounds.Tarkowski was one of the first names to be linked after the takeover. Any January move was likely to be rebuffed as Sean Dyche’s side fight alongside the Magpies to preserve their Premier League status.

But beyond the season, Tarkowski’s future remains in doubt and he is likely to be a free agent come the summer.

With Newcastle’s defence badly in need of a refresh, Tarkowski would offer Howe plenty of Premier League experience and a trusted addition to his squad.

Marcelo Brozovic

This would arguably be one of the more ambitious summer moves for the Magpies with Croatian midfielder Marcelo Brozovic viewed as a key player at Inter.

Sky Italia have reported the Serie A giants are “calm” about Brozovic’s contract situation but he is now able to agree a free transfer summer switch to a club outside of Italy.

With an ability to play in a number of roles in midfield, the former Dinamo Zagreb star would be a fine addition to the Newcastle squad and would compliment January signing Bruno Guimaraes.

After helping Inter to the Serie A title last season, and playing a lead role in Croatia’s run to the World Cup Final in 2018, Brozovic would bring plenty of big-game experience.

But Newcastle would need to see off interest from number of Champions League clubs is they were to complete a notable signing.

Corentin Tolisso

French outlet Jeunes Footeux linked Newcastle with a move for Bayern Munich midfielder Corentin Tolisso earlier this season.

The speculation was not without foundation and the France international does provide another high-profile option for the Magpies.

Comfortable on the ball and with an ability to pick an incisive pass, Tolisso would provide a calm influence as Howe looks to implement a more possession-based style of play.

The 27-year-old has made over a century of appearances for the Bundesliga champions - but has suffered a number of injuries that have limited his involvement this season.

A new deal looks unlikely and the 28-times capped France international could be up for grabs on an eye-catching free transfer this summer.

Andreas Christensen

Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen has endured a mixed time working under the likes of Jose Mourinho, Antonio Conte and Frank Lampard at Stamford Bridge.

The Danish international has improved under current boss Thomas Tuchel and put in his most memorable performance for the Blues when he replaced Thiago Silva as a first-half substitute in their Champions League final win against Manchester City in May 2021.

Christensen has retained the trust of the German and has gone on to make 18 starts under the German this season.

But this looks to be his final year at Stamford Bridge as his current deal ends this summer and the classy centre-back is the subject of interest from Borussia Dortmund, Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

His age, comfort on the ball and Premier League could make his an attract proposition to Newcastle as they look to boost their defensive ranks.

Alexandre Lacazette

It seems remarkable that it is almost eight years since Newcastle were first linked with a move for Alexandre Lacazette.

Then shining in Ligue 1 with Lyon, Lacazette remained in France until Arsenal completed a club record a then-club record £52million move for his services in July 2017.

The 30-year-old has gone on to score 70 goals in 192 appearances for the Gunners - a total that includes three goals in eight games against Newcastle.

Lacazette has been linked with a move to Tyneside this season and would provide Eddie Howe with an experienced option at the top end of the pitch if a summer move was to be completed.

Arsenal are believed to have offered a 12-month extension to his current deal that expires in the summer - but the French international is said to want a longer commitment.

Matthias Ginter

German international Matthias Ginter has spent his entire career in the Bundesliga with Freiburg, Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Monchengladbach.

However, the 28-year-old is now in the final six months of his contract with the latter and is likely to be available on a free transfer this summer.

The 46-times capped defender was said to be viewed as an option for Bayern Munich as they prepare to lose current centre-back Nicklas Sule.

But Ginter is reportedly ready to move away from Germany for the first time and United are one of the clubs that have been mentioned as a possible destination.

Florian Grillitsch

Hoffenheim’s defensive midfielder Florian Grillitsch is another potential option as Eddie Howe looks to refresh his midfield ranks.

The Austrian international has already been linked with a move to Tyneside by German outlet Kicker in recent months and is expected to depart Hoffenheim on a free transfer this summer.

His time in the Bundesliga has given him experience of the Europa League and Champions League and he was a key figure for Austria at Euro 2020.

Strong in the tackle, and with an ability to spark a counter-attack, Grillitsch would compliment a number of players that are already at St James Park - including former Hoffenheim team-mate Joelinton.

Spurs and Arsenal are also keen on the 26-year-old.
