The loan market can provide any club with a useful tool to get match action into senior players or hand young prospects an opportunity to impress at first-team level.
Under former manager Steve Bruce and current boss Eddie Howe, Newcastle United utilised the loan system with a total of 13 players making a total of 15 temporary moves away from Tyneside.
Their destinations ranged from a former Premier League club now plying their trade in the Championship to a Scottish second tier club and there were contrasting fortunes across the board.
Some players experienced Wembley disappointment, some failed to shine and struggled for game-time, whilst one wrote his name into the history books with a dramatic promotion-clinching goal on a remarkable final day of the season.

9. Freddie Woodman - AFC Bournemouth
After starting the Magpies first four Premier League games, Woodman suffered a hip injury and could not find his way back into the matchday squad. A loan move to Bournemouth offered a chance to secure game time but the keeper failed to make a Championship start for the Cherries. A big decision lies ahead this summer. Photo: Getty Images
10. Matty Bondswell - Shrewsbury Town
Bondswell joined Shrewsbury Town in January as the Magpies looked to test the young left-back at senior level. However, he did not get a minute of competitive action for his temporary employers and has since returned to Tyneside. A new contract offer has been made. Photo: Robbie Jay Barratt - AMA
11. Rodrigo Vilca - Universitario (Peru)
Vilca returned from his first loan spell at Doncaster Rovers and was sent for a second loan stint at Peruvian side Universitario until January 2023. He has made seven appearances so far and was sent off after receiving two yellow cards in a 4-1 home defeat against Alianza Lima in April. Photo: Charlotte Tattersall
12. Jack Young - Wycombe Wanderers
The talented midfielder made his first two senior appearances as a substitute during his loan spell with the League One club but they totalled around 20 minutes of game time. However, he did enough to impress and has joined the Chairboys on a permanent basis. Photo: Getty Images
