Bruno Guimaraes shares Newcastle United’s new owners’ vision of one day winning the Champions League.

During his media unveiling at St James’ Park on Monday afternoon, the £33.5million January signing from French side Lyon often referred to the “project” that has been sold to him.

Indeed, it further reiterates the lofty ambition of the club’s owners just after United jumped in ahead of several top European clubs to seal the highly-rated Guimaraes’ signature.

Guimaraes, encouragingly, didn’t shy away from the short-term aim either, which involves a scrap for Premier League survival.

Should that be achieved however, the Brazilian international is convinced Newcastle can become a “big power in world football”.

That is music to Newcastle fans’ ears.

‘Objective is to eventually win the Champions League’

“They were very upfront and honest about it,” Guimaraes said, when asked what the owners told him about the project.

“They didn’t disguise that the main objective and challenge was to remain in the Premier League this season but in the seasons coming, the objective is to be in the Champions League and eventually win the Champions League.

“I believe in the project. I believe in everything they spoke to me about. I’m really happy to be a part of this project.”

‘A big power in world football’

Guimaraes added: “We are going to be a club that is going to be a big power in world football.

“It’s already a club with a great tradition and beautiful history.

“I have no doubts about my decision to come to Newcastle.”

Joining the project

The timing of Guimaraes’ arrival on Tyneside was questioned during his unveiling given he has attracted interest from the likes Arsenal, Juventus and Manchester United.

Why move in January when he could perhaps have offers from clubs currently ranked higher than the Magpies at the end of the season?

“I’m driven by challenges,” Guimaraes replied.

“It’s always been my dream to play in the Premier League, I’ve never hidden that.

“The people at Newcastle really wanted me here, which is good to hear.

“When you join a project right at the beginning, it gives you more morale and respect from the fans.

“The fans have been so happy for me to be here. I think that was the determining factor in my decision.”
