Matt Targett has revealed a conversation with Danny Ings helped convince him to join Newcastle United.

The 26-year-old joined the Magpies on loan on January transfer deadline day from Aston Villa and all appeared in all 16 games he was available for.

Targett took a leap of faith in moving to St James’ Park, even if it was on a temporary basis, with United in deep relegation trouble.

The left-back played an integral part as United surged out of the bottom three to finish the campaign in 11th with their highest points total in eight years (49).

And speaking to BoyleSports, Targett revealed how Ings’ praise for Howe encouraged him to join United. Ings previously worked with the 45-year-old at Burnley.

Targett said: “I spoke to Danny Ings before I moved up here, just asking what he’s like as a manager, and he was just full of praise for him and he loved working for him.

“I was looking forward to working with him - obviously knowing what a good job he done at Bournemouth and then he’s come here and is doing just as well.

“It’s been great working with him.”

Newcastle are yet to decide whether or not to pursue a permanent move for the former Southampton youngster.

But the player himself has expressed an interest in staying at St James’ Park.

“I think everyone knows what I want but it’s up to the club,” Targett said after the 2-0 win over Arsenal last week.

“It’s a massive project, an exciting project. I’m sure everyone wants to be a part of it.

“I’ve loved every single minute of it. It’s been an incredible place to play my football.”
