Eddie Howe has again heaped praise on the midfield three of Joelinton, Joe Willock and Jonjo Shelvey following the win over Aston Villa.

The trio formed Newcastle United’s midfield for a third consecutive game, all of which have ended in wins to help boost the club’s Premier League survival hopes.

Indeed, victories against Leeds United, Everton and Villa have lifted United out of the relegation zone, where they’ve now opened up a four-point advantage on 18th placed Norwich City.

Their performances have arguably delayed a first start for January signing Bruno Guimaraes, whose two appearances since moving to Tyneside from Lyon for £33.5million plus adds-on have come from off the bench.

Howe said last week it was “dangerous” to drop players who are in-form, which suggests Guimaraes might have to wait a little while longer for a spot in the starting XI.

Howe on the midfield three of Joelinton, Willock & Shelvey

Howe said: “I have said before, from the outside, did I see Joelinton as a No.8, tracking blindside runs and crosses into our box?

“I didn’t see that until the Norwich game, when he played in the role and was absolutely brilliant.

“He has continued to develop and we have continued to work with him. His general performances have been so impressive - and that’s huge, huge credit to him.

“Joe Willock, we have worked hard with. he has shown a great attitude. He is a naturally talented lad. In the last year you’ve all seen the goals he’s scored.

“He has shown huge discipline for the team, has knuckled down. He is blocking shots and crosses all game which is hugely satisfying for me, as I think there has been a mentality change in him.

“Jonjo is playing in a very effective way.”

Newcastle next travel to West Ham United on Saturday afternoon.
