The eight Newcastle United players missing as starting XI v Bournemouth confirmed

Eddie Howe has named a full-strength Newcastle United starting XI to take on Bournemouth in the Carabao Cup this evening (kick-off 7:45pm).

Howe welcomes his former club to St James’ Park with a place in the quarter-finals up for grabs, and the 45-year-old isn’t messing about.

All five of the Magpies’ World Cup stars are back in the starting XI, with Callum Wilson, Bruno Guimaraes and Fabian Schar returning after missing Saturday’s 2-1 friendly win over Rayo Vallecano.

Nick Pope starts in goal behind a back four of Kieran Trippier, Schar, Sven Botman and Dan Burn. Guimaraes, Sean Longstaff and Joe Willock form a three-man midfield as Wilson leads the attack with Miguel Almiron and Joelinton either side.

Among the substitutes are Karl Darlow, Jonjo Shelvey, Allan Saint-Maximin and Chris Wood.

“I think in terms of the Premier League schedule, it’s a good thing to have this game,” Howe during yesterday’s press conference. “But we’ve looked at trying to get ourselves in the best possible physical condition for this game, (and) not use this game as a step for the Premier League.

“We’ve tried to give this game the same importance as a Premier League game, and for us it is, because it’s a chance to progress in a very important competition for us. That’s how we’ve approached the game.”

Missing from the matchday squad, however, is goalkeepers Loris Karius and Mark Gillespie. The latter was left out of United’s 25-man Premier League squad but is eligible to play in cup competitions.

Jamal Lewis, Elliot Anderson and Ryan Fraser are also absent, while Alexander Isak (thigh), Paul Dummett (back) and Emil Krafth (ACL) were ruled out prior to the game through injury.
