Five new signings arrived through the doors at St James’ Park with Kieran Trippier, Chris Wood, Bruno Guimaraes, Matt Targett and Dan Burn joining the club’s battle for Premier League survival.
There was also plenty of outgoings too – mostly loans – as Eddie Howe prepares to name his 25-man squad the remaining 17 matches of the campaign.
While some United fans may feel their side are still short in some positions, the objective of ending the month stronger than has been achieved.
Trippier and Guimaraes were statement signings, while Wood, Targett and Burn add vital top-flight experience.
Here’s a recap of the ins and outs at Newcastle during the January transfer window:
1. IN: Kieran Trippier (Atletico Madrid)
The £12million arrival of England international Trippier kickstarted Newcastle’s January transfer business. Whilst his football ability speaks for itself, his on and off field leadership is another key trait that the 31-year-old brings. Photo: Stu Forster
2. OUT: Rosaire Longelo (Accrington Stanley)
The under–23s winger joined League One side Accrington Stanley on a permanent basis after failing to break into the senior set up during the two-and-a-half years he spent on Tyneside following his move from West Ham. Photo: Clive Brunskill
3. IN: Chris Wood (Burnley)
In desperate need of a striker following Callum Wilson’s injury, the Magpies activated Wood’s £25million release in his Burnley contract. United’s relegation rivals have since reinvested the money in Wout Weghorst. Photo: Ian MacNicol
4. OUT: Joe White (Hartlepool United, loan)
With White’s contract situation resolved, the 19-year-old was loaned to League Two side Hartlepool. Plenty will watch on with interest as White looks to put the talent that has made him one of United’s brightest young prospects to use at senior level. Photo: Michael Regan
