England international Kieran Trippier was the first to arrive, while Chris Wood wasn’t too far behind following his £25million move from Burnley.
The Magpies caught many top European clubs off guard when they swooped in to sign highly-rated midfielder Bruno Guimaraes from Lyon.
And deadline day was rounded-off as Matt Targett, on loan from Aston Villa, and Dan Burn, a boyhood Newcastle fan, were confirmed.
But among all the positivity, there were many frustrating moments for the club’s recruitment team and fans throughout the month as not every transfer bid or interest went to plan.
Here, NewcastleWorld takes a look at the January signings Newcastle are believed to have missed out on:
1. Sven Botman
The Netherlands under-21s international was the club’s number one target at the start of the window but Lille held firm, rejecting two bids from Newcastle. In an interview on deadline day, Botman did hint at a summer exit. Perhaps United will return to the table then. Photo: JEAN-CHRISTOPHE VERHAEGEN
2. Diego Carlos
Newcastle were encouraged that a deal for Carlos could be completed but Sevilla were tough negotiators, with their asking price believed to have been changed on a few occasions. In the end, United walked away, and turned their attention to Dan Burn. Photo: Fran Santiago
3. Hugo Ekitike
A fee was agreed for the Reims wonderkid on deadline day but the 19-year-old was unconvinced that a move to relegation-threatened Newcastle was the right one. He’ll reassess his options in the summer. Photo: ROMAIN PERROCHEAU
4. Jesse Lingard
The inability to land Lingard was no fault of Newcastle’s. The player wanted a loan move to Tyneside but Manchester United wouldn’t budge, quoting some extortionate figures, including, at one point, a £12m survival bonus. Photo: Matthew Peters
