England international Kieran Trippier was the first to arrive, while Chris Wood wasn’t too far behind following his £25million move from Burnley.
The Magpies caught many top European clubs off guard when they swooped in to sign highly-rated midfielder Bruno Guimaraes from Lyon.
And deadline day was rounded-off as Matt Targett, on loan from Aston Villa, and Dan Burn, a boyhood Newcastle fan, were confirmed.
But among all the positivity, there were many frustrating moments for the club’s recruitment team and fans throughout the month as not every transfer bid or interest went to plan.
Here, NewcastleWorld takes a look at the January signings Newcastle are believed to have missed out on:

5. Dele Alli
Following the deadline day collapse of the Lingard deal, Newcastle reportedly made a last-ditch attempt to sign Alli from Tottenham. The problem however, was the England midfielder in the process of finalising a permanent move to Everton. Photo: Alex Davidson
6. Lucas Digne
Newcastle registered a strong interest in Digne after the left-back had fallen out with Rafa Benitez. But a move to St James’ Park didn’t tickle his fancy and went on to join Aston Villa. A few days later, Benitez was sacked at Everton. Photo: Michael Regan
7. Mitchel Bakker
Newcastle explored the possibility of signing Bakker from Bayer Leverkusen, who were open to making a quick profit on the left-back having only just signed him from PSG in the summer. Twice the transfer looked likely to happen, but twice it fell through. Photo: Sebastian Widmann
8. James Tarkowski
Tarkowski was one of the first names to be linked after the takeover. A deal was always going to prove difficult, even more so after Newcastle activated Chris Wood’s £25miliion release clause to rub salt into Burnley's wounds. Photo: Ryan Pierse
