He then marked his appearance since becoming a United player with an assist in Brazil’s 4-0 win over Miguel Almiron’s Paraguay on Wednesday.

Guimaraes was one of five January additions, which also included Kieran Trippier, Chris Wood, Dan Burn and Matt Targett - the latter joining on loan from Aston Villa.

Presuming Howe’s men do not have a day off before the visit of Everton on Tuesday evening, Guimaraes will get three days worth of training under his belt.

A debut for Guimaraes against the Toffees would undoubtedly lift the St James’ Park crowd, though Howe may also feel it is too soon to start him.

That’s the dilemma the Magpies head coach is facing ahead of a massive Premier League fixture.

Why are Newcastle fans so excited about Bruno Guimaraes’ arrival?

Simply because it was a real coup that Newcastle managed to sign Guimaraes, who has been recognised as one of the leading midfielders in Europe.

Top European clubs have tracked Guimaraes. Arsenal were tipped to sign him in January, while Manchester United and Juventus are admirers.

While the defence has been main the point of criticism this season, the midfield has also become a problem.

Guimaraes is an aggressive deep-lying midfielder and one that is constantly looking for forward passes.

His statistics this season include a hugely impressive 150 passes into the final third and 144 progressive passes. He’s also won 44 tackles in total.

It is those traits and stats that Newcastle fans hope will transform their side and ultimately seal Premier League safety.
