Ryan Fraser’s fitness is “improving” at Newcastle United - but he remains in a race against time to play again this season.

The Scotland international has missed the previous four games after picking up a hamstring injury in the recent 1-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Fraser was forced to withdraw after just 13 minute, though Eddie Howe later revealed his scan results showed no serious damage.

However, with just three matches remaining - Manchester City, Arsenal and Burnley - time is running out for Fraser to return before the 2021/22 season is out.

“He has improved,“ Howe admitted. “He’s been at the training ground, out on the grass, with the physios still. He’s not yet been handed over to sports science, so there is still some way to go.

“Hopefully, we’ll see him before the end of the season.”

One player who could return against Man City on Sunday is Fabian Schar.

The Switzerland defender limped out of United’s 1-0 loss to Liverpool last weekend - and it was feared he may have broken his foot.

Although the 28-year-old hasn’t trained this week, Howe hopes to have him available at the Etihad Stadium.

“We haven’t seen him yet this week.

“He got a knock on the top of his foot. He went for a scan immediately after the game to check it wasn’t broken because it swelled up. But fortunately, there is no fracture.

“We hope he’ll be back to be available.”

Callum Wilson is set to come back into contention, while a late call will be made on Kieran Trippier.
