Livramento started against the Blues in his preferred position at right-back in place of the injured Kieran Trippier. Trippier was also ruled out for the trip to the Etihad Stadium after picking up a calf injury during the 3-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers.
At the Etihad Stadium, Martin Dubravka started in goal behind a defensive five of Murphy, Lascelles, Schar, Botman and Burn. In midfield, Sean Longstaff, Bruno Guimaraes and Joe Willock retained their places.

On the bench was Miguel Almiron, who was dropped from the defeat at Chelsea, along with Emil Krafth, Lewis Hall, Matt Targett, Paul Dummett, Matt Ritchie, Lewis Miley, Elliot Anderson and Loris Karius.
Prior to kick-off, Newcastle hadn't won at the Etihad Stadium in 10 years after goals from Rolando Aarons and Moussa Sissoko netted in a 2-0 League Cup victory.
