Eddie Howe is facing a big decision over which goalkeeper starts for Newcastle United at Arsenal.

Karl Darlow got the nod for the 3-3 draw with Brentford last weekend but Martin Dubravka’s return to fitness has sparked a debate.

There appears to be a strong majority in favour Dubravka starting at the Emirates - but what’s the view from inside the Newcastle dressing room?

Why are there calls for Martin Dubravka to be recalled?

Darlow, who has started the previous eight games, endured a tough afternoon last time out and was at fault for Ivan Toney’s equaliser as the ball slipped through his hands.

Prior to the game, sections of supporters had questioned Darlow’s inclusion ahead of the Slovakian - and it now feels he did little to justify his selection.

Dubravka lacked competitive minutes when he sat on the bench against Crystal Palace and Chelsea.

However, for the draw with Brentford, Dubravka was fresh from playing 90 minutes in his country’s 6-0 win over Malta.

Indeed, Howe kept faith with the players who weren’t on international duty - with Switzerland’s Fabian Schar the only exception,

Dubravka has had to overcome a complex injury. The surgery on his foot ruled him out for just over 12 weeks.

What does Martin Dubravka bring to the team?

Dubravka brings confidence to the backline.

He has a great habit of coming for crosses and is comfortable with the ball at his feet - a big trait to have in a typical Howe side.

When the Slovakian returned to the starting XI for the remaining 13 games of last term, United lost just three games as they surged towards top-flight survival.

For a defence that has conceded a joint-league worst of 27 goals, Dubravka could aid his side’s defensive troubles.

What Jason Tindall said when asked by NewcastleWorld about a potential Martin Dubravka recall

Tindall said: “I think everyone’s in contention for the game against Arsenal.

“Each opposition provides a different test and every player gets judged on a daily basis

in training and the manager will always pick what teams he feels is best to go out and win the game.

“We’ve got two good goalkeepers in (Karl) Darlow and Martin (Dubravka). It’s great to have such a good goalkeeper to choose from.”
