Deadline day signing Dan Burn could miss Newcastle United’s Premier League fixture against Everton on Tuesday night with a toe injury.

The 29-year-old was a £13million arrival from Brighton and Hove Albion on the final day of the January transfer window - signing a two-and-a-half-year contract with his boyhood club.

Burn, one of five new winter additions, trained with his new teammates over the weekend and was expected to make his debut at home to Frank Lampard’s Toffees.

However, while Eddie Howe is hopeful Burn will be in contention, the Magpies head coach revealed the central defender has been aggravated by a toe issue.

Eddie Howe on Dan Burn’s toe injury

Howe explained: “Dan has a slight toe problem that has been aggravating him the last few days, which is hopefully nothing too serious.

“He’s got an infected toenail. It’s a small thing but sometimes can be a big thing.

“We’ll see how he is today.”

An update on Joelinton, Dummett, Ritchie & Fernandez

Joelinton limped out of Newcastle’s 1-0 win at Leeds United with a groin problem and didn’t train in Saudi Arabia - but Howe confirmed the Brazilian is fine to face Everton.

The same cannot be said for Paul Dummett (fatigue) and Matt Ritchie (knee) however, who have not trained since before the visit to Elland Road.

Meanwhile, Federico Fernandez is set to step up his return from a calf injury this week having been out of action since December.

“Joelinton has trained,” Howe said. “He’s looking good.”

“Paul Dummett hasn’t trained yet. Matt Ritchie is still out longer-term.

“Fede Fernandez is having his first day with sports science, so he’s edging closer to a return to training. He hasn’t trained with the group yet.”
