Brentford boss Thomas Frank made a point of referencing Alexander Isak’s price tag - after Newcastle United’s club-record signing scored the winning goal at the Gtech Community Stadium.

The Swede helped the Magpies record a fifth straight win after putting his side in front on the hour-mark after an own goal by David Raya cancelled out Ivan Toney’s first-half penalty.

Clearly irritated by his team’s narrow defeat, Frank felt the need to shout out the £63million fee United paid to Real Sociedad last summer.

“It was a top performance against Newcastle, that everyone, including myself, has praised this season,” said Frank during his post-match press conference.

“I don’t think any team have done to Newcastle what we did in the first half and we could easily have been 3-0 up. We gave everything.

“But there were two moments that decided the game. It was a good action from Joelinton but I think he is fortunate to score, the ball hits David’s legs and takes a deflection. Then it is quality from Isak – the £63million signing.”

Frank is right, his players were on top of Newcastle in the first-half. Toney had a goal ruled offside and a penalty saved by Nick Pope before beating the England goalkeeper at the second attempt.

Howe, however, changed the dynamic of the game after the break when introducing Callum Wilson and Anthony Gordon.

“They had to change the game,” said Frank. “We were on so much on top. It was two moments that changed the game. The performance was very positive in many ways. I know when I cool down tomorrow and see the sun rise again then I’ll be very proud of the performance.

“When you’re that close, you want a little bit more - but that’s football.”
