'Top class' forward spotted at St James' Park ahead of expected Newcastle United transfer

Newcastle United winger Miguel Almiron has arrived at St James’ Park for what could be the final time.

The 30-year-old is expected to complete a £10million move to former club Atlanta United in the coming days, however is in the squad for this afternoon’s Premier League clash against AFC Bournemouth (kick-off 12:30pm).

Almiron will take his place on the bench but may be required in the latter stages of the game. An appearance could mark his 223rd and last for the club.

When asked for the latest on Almiron’s situation, United boss Eddie Howe explained: “The latest is we expect him in [Friday] and in the squad [against Bournemouth]. With him, anything can happen. But he will be in the squad tomorrow.

“He’s been top class, as you know, his playing persona is his personality. He comes in every day and lives his life through the football club.

“I’ve got a player in the squad at the moment who is fit, available and wants to play so I have to use him for the best of Newcastle United until he’s not here.”

Injuries to Harvey Barnes and Callum Wilson have left United light of bodies in the attacking areas. Almiron’s departure will only weaken that.

But with Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) to contend with, the decision to let Almiron would be a financial one.

“It’s not ideal (selling a winger),” Howe added. “I don't think it’s ideal from our side, we don’t want to lose players but we know there’s a reality to PSR and the ongoing managing of that situation.

“We’ve said many times over the past couple of weeks, decisions aren’t being made for football they’re being made because we potentially have to (for financial reasons).”
