Newcastle United signed Will Osula from Sheffield United for £15million last summer.

Newcastle United assistant coach Jason Tindall has revealed Will Osula reminds him of a young Callum Wilson.

Tindall played a key role in bringing Osula to St James’ Park last summer after first coming across the Dane during his spell as a coach at Sheffield United in 2021. “He’s a player I’ve known since Jason’s time at Sheffield United really,” Eddie Howe said previously. “We’ve been tracking him for the last three years.”

After joining from Copenhagen at an early age, Osula penned his first professional contract with the Blades when Tindall was there but didn’t make his senior debut until just under a year later. By that point, Tindall was at Newcastle with Howe.

So, what was about Osula that caught Tindall’s attention and ultimately convinced Newcastle to pay £15million to sign him?

“Just the raw pace that he has, reminds me a lot of a young Callum Wilson,” Tindall told NewcastleWorld. “He runs in behind extremely well, he's a goalscorer, great size, great athlete and he's got a fantastic attitude. And obviously when you're as young as Will, then, you've got huge potential.”

With Alexander Isak recognised as one of the world’s best strikers and Wilson a deadly Premier League finisher on his day, Osula has been restricted to just three starts this campaign, all of which have come in the cup against lower-league opposition.

He scored in the 3-1 win over Bromley in the third round of FA Cup in January and started the next round match away to Birmingham City. But in terms of the Premier League, Osula has only made 11 substitute appearances.

But Tindall insists the 21-year-old is developing well and has urged those keen to see more of him be patient.

“Will Osula is developing really, really well here and like a lot of players that we sign at the football club, certainly young players, the likes of Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento, etc, they have to be patient,” said Tindall. “Will's getting a lot of work into him on the training ground and we're all confident that when Will's moment and his opportunities come, then he'll take them.

"He's developed really well, showing really, really good signs of becoming a top player. And as I say, when you're competing for a place alongside Alex Isak, it's not easy - one of the best strikers in Europe right now. He has to be patient, as I said, like everybody else. And when his opportunity comes, I'm sure he'll take it."

Could Will Osula leave Newcastle United on loan this summer?

Considering Osula’s lack of game time, could he benefit from a loan spell next season? “That's something we have to sort of assess, I'd say, week by week, month by month,” Tindall responded.

“We've got no plans to send Will out on loan, he's an important part of the squad right now and we know in football, things can change very, very quickly. We've seen it time and time again throughout our managerial career, not just here.

“As I said, with the likes of Lewis Hall and Tino and young players especially, they probably do get a little bit impatient and frustrated at times, but it's important that they stay grounded, they keep working hard every single day and the work they put in on the training ground will go a long way to them when they get the opportunity, they take it and Will's the same.”
