Newcastle United are keen to sign a second defender following the arrival of Lloyd Kelly from Bournemouth

Newcastle United are hoping to bolster their defensive options this summer as they target a return to Europe in the 2024/25 season.

Last term the Magpies fired in a record-breaking 85 goals from 38 Premier League games, but their achilles heel proved to be their defensive record as they conceded 62 goals over the course of the season.

Newcastle struggled with an avalanche of injury issues across the pitch last season, and in defence that shows no signs of slowing down this term, with Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles both unlikely to return until the end of 2024.

In a bid to react to this issue, Newcastle have acquired Lloyd Kelly on a free transfer from Bournemouth, but after missing out on a fellow free agent former Fulham man Tosin Adarabioyo earlier in the window it is suspected that the Magpies will attempt to recruit at least one more defender. One star who has been heavily linked with a move to St James’ Park this summer has been Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi, who impressed in his 25 appearances last term as the Eagles finished in the top half of the table.

At just 23 years of age, Guehi still has plenty of potential to grow into one of the best central defenders in the division. He is blessed with great pace, strong leadership skills and tremendous position sense. This has been showcased throughout Euro 2024 for England where he has started four games in the absence of Harry Maguire and helped his team to a European Championship semi-final.

Guehi has been a star at Crystal Palace for a number of years and he is currently under contract at Selhurst Park until the summer of 2026. Oliver Glasner is thought to be keen to keep in South London for a longer period, but has reportedly been rebuffed in his attempts to extend the player’s contract. That’s according to Sun Sport who understand that the player has not intention of signing a new contract at this time - adding that he first wants to consider his options as he strives to play European football in the near future.

Geordie Boot Boys reports that the Magpies have been tracking Guehi for a number of years and it is understood that he currently has a valuation within the region of £50m. This makes a transfer bid possible although it is understood to be more likely that they move for AC Milan’s Malick Thiaw who could be available for just £34m in comparison. Guehi is currently on international duty with Newcastle United star Anthony Gordon and the former Everton ace has been full of praise for the defender and admitted he would welcome him with open arms to St James’ Park.

In an earlier interview with TalkSport, he explained: “He’s top, he’s such a good player and I was glad the nation got to see him shine on that stage because he’s such a lovely guy and he deserves what’s coming to him.

“I thought he was unbelievable in that game [vs Serbia] considering his height compared to the strikers they had on. He won every header, he was aggressive, intercepting loads and his main strength is composure on the ball, he’s like a midfielder. So him and Stonesy at the back, it's a great partnership to control a game.”

On the speculation over a potential switch to Tyneside, Gordon added: “I haven’t actually seen the Newcastle links, but it goes without saying I’d absolutely love him to come because he’s a top player and he’d make us a better team.”
