Highly reputable transfer guru Fabrizio Romano believes there is a chance Newcastle United could sign Jesse Lingard this week.

The Magpies are pushing hard to add the England international to their playing squad before the January window slams shut on Monday at 11pm.

It is understood Lingard is open to joining Eddie Howe’s side on loan, however Manchester United aren’t as keen given the player is out-of-contract in the summer.

The Red Devils prefer to do a permanent deal but Lingard is reluctant to commit as he wants to explore his options further in the summer.

Newcastle, however, are refusing to give up in hope that Man United will sanction a six-month move.

And according to Romano, an Italian journalist with 6.5million followers on Twitter, believes the Magpies are confident of finalising a move.

"I was working on Newcastle to understand if they will close this Jesse Lingard deal,” Romano told Rio Ferdinand’s YouTube show FIVE. “They are pushing to have Jesse Lingard deal as soon as possible.

“They are negotiating with the player, they are negotiating with Manchester United. They are feeling confident on the deal, so let’s see.

“I think there are chances for Jesse Lingard to sign this week with Newcastle. It’s not done but they are pushing.

“I see him leaving the club in this final week.”

If Newcastle fail in their pursuit of Lingard, Romano believes attention could turn to Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Dele Alli.

Interestingly, Alli shares the same agency as January arrivals Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood.

“Dele Alli wants to play,” Romano added. “This is why I still see Dele as a player to keep an eye on in the final days of the window.

“Newcastle could be a possibility, let’s see what happens with Lingard. Newcastle have asked for information on Dele Alli.

“Everton is another possibility but it is not the priority now because of course the player wants to understand who will be the manager and what will happen before saying yes or no.

“I was told a few days ago that Tottenham were looking for a swap deal around Dele Alli but nothing was possible.”
