Two Champions League giants 'join race' for £42m Newcastle United target as Lazio defender eyed

A round-up of the latest Newcastle United headlines as they prepare to face Fulham in the FA Cup next week.

Newcastle United will enjoy a rare weekend with no football with the Premier League in the middle of its winter break. Eddie Howe's side suffered late heartbreak in Saturday's 3-2 loss at home to Manchester City but have plenty of time to recover, ahead of facing Fulham in the FA Cup fourth round later later this month.

Financial Fair Play concerns will limit major transfer activity between now and January 31 but with a mounting injury list and poor form, the Magpies will be on their toes for any opportunities. And NewcastleWorld has rounded up some of the latest headlines from St James' Park.

Phillips rivals

Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are the latest teams to join the race for Kalvin Phillips. The Telegraph reports that they and Newcastle are among six clubs interested in the midfielder, with City set to make their decision next week.

Howe's side have been linked with a move for Phillips all month with Sandro Tonali and Joelinton both out for the rest of the season. They are keen to take the 28-year-old on loan but are reportedly unwilling to fork out a £7million loan fee and commit to a £40m obligation to buy.

Crystal Palace and West Ham are also interested, with City and Phillips set to finalise their choice next week. Regular playing time is crucial for the former Leeds United man, who is desperate to keep his place in the England squad for this summer's European Championships in Germany.

Lazio star eyed

Newcastle are reportedly among three Premier League teams interested in a potential move for Lazio defender Alessio Romagnoli. Italian outlet Calciomercato reports they are joined by Fulham and Brighton in keeping a close eye on the 29-year-old ahead of the summer window.

The Magpies are lacking depth in central defence and that vulnerability has been cruelly highlighted this season. Sven Botman has only just returned from a long-term injury and Fabian Schar, Dan Burn and Jamal Lascelles also unavailable at different points.

Romagnoli is said to be happy at Lazio, where he has been since 2022, but could be tempted by a move to the Premier League if a big-money offer comes in. The Italian is contracted until 2027 with the Biancocelesti.
