Newcastle United’s Carabao Cup journey ended in a heartbreaking penalty shoot-out defeat to Chelsea as the club’s away form continues to be their downfall in both the league and cup competitions.
Newcastle’s exit in the quarter-final comes as a major blow to the team’s hopes of silverware this season and only amplifies the importance of the FA Cup clash against Sunderland at the start of 2024.
The Magpies will hope to bounce back from their setback quickly in the coming weeks and the feeling around the club from many outsiders is that the team need a boost in January to help ease the workload on the existing starting lineup which is rarely changed due to injuries.
With that in mind Newcastle World has rounded up a list of transfers that are likely to happen next month, whilst also ruling out moves that no longer seem on the cards:
1. Centre midfield: Kalvin Phillips: Estimated cost - loan deal
Kalvin Phillips is almost certain to leave Manchester City on loan in January, according to reports from Fabrizio Romano. Despite the form of Lewis Miley, it is clear Newcastle have a hole in their midfield with the suspension of Sandro Tonali and the ongoing injury crisis. Phillips offers a wealth of Premier League experience, is a proven leader and should be a feasible loan deal (if Newcastle can see off competition from Juventus)

2. Goalkeeper: David De Gea: estimated cost - free agent
In theory David De Gea would be the perfect addition to cover for Nick Pope due to his wealth of experience and talent. However, given what are likely to be huge wage demands and the club’s limitations on FFP it seems unlikely they will take the risk and other areas may be prioritised.
3. Defender: Piero Hincapie: estimated cost - £60m +
Piero Hincapie has all the attributes to be a strong addition to a top Premier League team and his excellent form for Bayer Leverkusen showcases this. However, the Magpies face great competition to sign the player from Arsenal, Manchester United and a host of other top clubs. Given the team’s place at the top of the Bundesliga table it is also suspected that the price could be much higher in January than it would be in the summer. (Getty Images)
4. Midfielder: Ruben Neves: estimated cost - loan
Talksport sensationally linked Newcastle with a loan move for Saudi Pro League star Ruben Neves. The links sent shockwaves round the football world and were partially seen as the cause of a vote over same player transfers. Since the vote was passed - Ruben Neves has distanced himself from a move to SJP and insisted he’s happy to continue playing in Saudi Arabia. (Getty Images)
