Mehrdad Ghodoussi thanked Newcastle United fans for their "unwavering" support during the New Year's Day defeat at Liverpool.

Thousands of Newcastle supporters made the trip to Merseyside and watched as their team lost 4-2 at Anfield. All six goals arrived in the second-half as Mohamed Salah netted a brace while Curtis Jones and Cody Gakpo were also on the scoresheet to cancel out Alexander Isak and Sven Botman for United.

It was the Magpies' seventh defeat in eight games, a period that has seen Eddie Howe's men exit the Champions League and Carabao Cup, and slip to ninth in the Premier League table. But Ghodoussi has thanked supporters for sticking by their team.

He posted on X: "Cold and wet night, but the support was unwavering. Thank you".

Ghodoussi was in attendance at Anfield, a ground United still haven't won at since 1994, and next up is Saturday afternoon's FA Cup clash away to bitter rivals Sunderland.

Indeed, it is the first Tyne-Wear derby in eight years as Newcastle look to claim a first derby win since Ryan Taylor's iconic free-kick in August 2011.
