Miguel Almiron is all set to join Atlanta United following six roller-coaster years at St James’ Park.

Newcastle United stumped up a club-record fee - around £21million - to sign the Paraguayan in January 2019. His arrival came on the same day Newcastle beat Manchester City 2-1 to bring a renewed sense of optimism to Tyneside.

One purple patch in 2022-23 to help the Magpies secure Champions League qualification aside, Almiron will not be remembered for possessing world-class ability. But his enthusiasm and relentless work rate have rarely been matched by any Toon star past or present.

Eddie Howe pushed the 30-year-old in front of the away end after Newcastle’s 3-1 win over Southampton to receive a rapturous reception. In his usual ambiguous manner, the Toon boss denied this was a “goodbye” but he is expected to move before the window closes.

Isaac Hayden, Alex Murphy, Travis Hernes and Charlie McArthur headed out on loan earlier this month. When asked about whether Almiron bid farewell, Howe said: “Not really. I think it was just that it wasn't planned.

“I was just the crowd were very much embracing him and giving him a lot of love. And I just felt it was... You know, Miggy's not that kind of character that's got a huge ego that absorbs all the attention.

“But I just felt it was imperative that we got him to the front. And everyone acknowledged he's been unbelievable for us. His attitude, his commitment, the way he's played. I'm not saying it's a goodbye. We don't know what's going to happen. But I just thought it was a great moment for him.”

Italian sports journalist Fabrizio Romano has now green-lit the deal, with the player set to travel to the US. He posted on social media: “Miguel Almiron leaves Newcastle to join Atlanta United. Confirmed and here we go!

“Verbal agreement sealed between all parties, also player side on four year and half contract. Fee around $12million for Almiron set to travel for medical tests.”
