Before the march police officers said they were expecting up to 2,000 French fans to take part in the event, which has been organised by the fans and club and encouraged by the PSG Supporters Service on social media.

After an initial stand-off with home fans, the vocal supporters snaked their way through the city before they came face to face with an equally expressive set of Newcastle fans next to St James Park.

This is the first of three games Newacstle United are hosting in the Champions League group stage this season, with fixtures against Borussia Dortmund and AC Milan yet to come.

Fan marches are a common aspect of European away days for fans from mainland Europe and happen throughout the continent on a weekly basis, especially for major fixtures.
