Newcastle United target Kalvin Phillips has opened up about his future at Manchester City after successfully helping England to Euro 2024 qualification.

Newcastle United have been heavily linked with a January move for the out-of-favour Man City midfielder in recent months and speculation over a move is likely to escalate in the coming weeks as the January window draws near.

Phillips’s frustration has been amplified in recent weeks as Pep Guardiola opted to select natural full back Rico Lewis in the holding midfield role during Rodri’s absence following a three-game ban for a red card.

This led to Roy Keane stating that the Spaniard “doesn’t trust Phillips” and fuelled further fire on the ongoing exit rumours. The Daily Mail reports that Phillips has admirers from three different sides which are Newcastle, Everton and German champions Bayern Munich. Fabrizio Romano, however, states that no team has started concrete talks with the midfielder.

Phillips was involved in 70 minutes of England’s 3-1 victory over Italy and was a surprising starter in many pundits’ eyes due to his lack of first team football. After the victory Phillips opened up about his career aspirations and his desire to retain his England spot.

He said: "As a football player you always want to be playing, I want to be playing as much as possible but I haven’t done that for a year and a half. I always try and make sure I am ready for whatever comes. I want minutes, I want to go the Euros. We will see what happens."

These comments were echoed by his international coach Gareth Southgate. He added: “Ideally, we would have everyone playing regularly, but you can see Kalvin (Phillips), Harry Maguire, the questions have been about them playing at club level but they were both outstanding tonight.

"They are so important for us. Yes, of course we would like to see them playing more, but they are up against very good players at their club. Every time he plays for us, he does a fantastic job."
