Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe admits it was “difficult” to see Burnley relegated from the Premier League.

The Magpies’ 2-1 win at Turf Moor, courtesy of a brace from Callum Wilson, condemned the Clarets to Championship football next season.

Leeds United’s win at 10-man Brentford saw them stay up at the expense of Mike Jackson’s men on the final day of the campaign.

Howe, a former manager of Burnley over a decade ago now, was sad to see the Lancashire club drop into England’s second-tier.

He said: “It’s a very difficult day for me as I have emotional ties to Burnley. My thoughts are with the supporters, players, staff and directors.

“It’s a very proud football club. It hurts to see the club being relegated because I’ve been in that position and how difficult it can be.

“I hope they’ll bounce back very quickly. They’re capable of doing it but as we know, the Championship is a very difficult league.”
