‘What was?’ - Alan Shearer’s sharp response to Mikel Arteta after ‘embarrassing’ Newcastle United verdict

Alan Shearer has fired back at Mikel Arteta after the Arsenal boss labelled Newcastle United’s goal as an “absolute disgrace”.

Following a lengthy VAR check, Anthony Gordon’s only goal of the game was controversially awarded in the 64th minute.

Those at Stockley Park reviewed three different stages, the first to see if Joe Willock had managed to keep the ball in play in the build-up, the second for a possible foul on Gabriel and the third an offside check on Gordon.

After a five-minute standstill, the goal was awarded as United extended their unbeaten Premier League run to seven matches.

“We have to talk about the result because you have to talk about how the hell this goal stand ups and it’s incredible,” Arteta said during his post-match press conference.

“I feel embarrassed but I have to be the one now coming here to try to defend the club and please ask for help, because it’s an absolute disgrace that this goal is allowed; it’s an absolute disgrace.

“It’s not a goal for many reasons; it’s not a goal, for more than one reason at least. It’s not a go and it’s too much at stake here. We put in so much effort, it’s so difficult to compete at this level, and it’s an absolute disgrace.

“Again, I feel embarrassed having more than 20 years in this country, and this is nowhere near the level to describe this as the best league in the world. I am sorry.”

Arteta’s post-match comments were relayed by Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker on X, to which Shearer sharply replied “what was?”.

The Magpies legend watched the win from a pub and provided his thoughts throughout the evening.

Shearer questioned why it took the officials so long to award the goal. At full-time, he posted: “Keeeeeeeemmmooonnnn TOON TOON black & white army”.
