Eddie Howe has been consistent in handing Newcastle United under-21s players an opportunity to train with the first team throughout the campaign.

Take the mid-season visit to Saudi Arabia for example, Howe included Alex Murphy, Jamie Miley, Dylan Stephenson, Joe White and Jay Turner-Cooke in the squad, and handed each one of them minutes in the 5-0 win over Al-Hilal.

And in the build-up to this evening’s Premier League clash at Bournemouth, Howe called up some new faces with the likes of Amadou Diallo - a free agent arrival from West Ham last summer - former Liverpool youngster Remi Savage and the Miley brothers Lewis and Jamie linking up across the week.

“If we have a gap, and feel we want to boost our numbers we’ll speak to Ben Dawson and the staff who see the 23s train regularly, and we’ll ask their opinion on who they feel should come up,” Howe explained.

“It’s really important they have that power, because you want that motivation from the group to be at a high level to impress the staff to try and come here, because that’s where they want to be.”

Interestingly, Howe set aside praise for Lewis Miley, perhaps an indication of how highly he and the club rate their England under-17s international.

As well as featuring out in Riyadh, the midfielder made a cameo appearance in the friendly win at home to La Liga side Rayo Vallecano in December - despite the tender age of 16.

“I’ve got to say the lads that have come up … Lewis Miley’s been with us consistently. He’s doing really well in his development, and there have been other players who have really impressed.”
