Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Julen Lopetegui felt his side were denied a clear penalty in their 2-1 defeat to Newcastle United.

The incident came in the first-half when the scoreline was level. Nick Pope mis-controlled Sven Botman’s backpass and brought Raul Jimenez down in the box.

Referee Andrew Madley waved away the visitors’ penalty appeals before VAR agreed with the on-field decision.

The Magpies went on to win the game 2-1. Hwang Hee-chan’s 70th-minute equaliser cancelled out Alexander Isak’s first-half before substitute Miguel Almiron found a winner.

“In the first half they worked through us,” said Lopetegui during his post-match interview.

“For me, we should have had a penalty. We are very unlucky with the referee. We were unlucky against Liverpool and then again today.

“In the second half we improved a lot. We changed a lot of things and were able to get at them.

“It was a pity that we had no changes left to make after they scored. We lost against a very good team.”

Newcastle legend Alan Shearer understood Lopetegui’s frustration. During the game, the former No.9 tweeted: “That’s a very lucky escape. Could, probably should have been a pen after that mistake from Pope.”
