Dan Ashworth only commenced his work at Newcastle United in June 2022

Manchester United are considering an official approach for Dan Ashworth, according to reports.

Talk intensified over Christmas about Newcastle United’s sporting director possibly jumping ship to Old Trafford. Ashworth has been in the job for less than two years, arriving in February 2022 but not undertaking his role officially until June.

He has led a wave of youthful arrivals at Benton, with Yankuba Minteh and Garang Kuol the standout prospects. Newcastle also raided Manchester City for midfielder Alfie Harrison in January.

CEO Darren Eales told reporters last month that Ashworth remains happy on Tyneside. He said: “So Dan, he’s spoken on the record recently about being happy in the project. We go back to our days at West Bromwich Albion where we worked together.

“Dan’s done a great job. There’s a lot more work to be done and we’re hopeful he’s here for the long term. He’s certainly enjoying his time at the moment.”

Rumours linking him with a move to Old Trafford had simmered - until now. Fresh claims from GiveMeSport suggest Sir Jim Ratcliffe will “push” for Ashworth to join his Man United rebuild.

Ashworth’s links to the Red Devils predate his time at Newcastle, with reports naming him as a target for the Glazers before he joined Brighton. The prospect of fronting an ambitious new era at the Theatre of Dreams could appeal to the 52-year-old.

Ratcliffe bought a 25 per cent minority stake in the club but has been granted full sporting control by the Glazers. They announced a bold move to poach Man City CEO Omar Berrada - and Ashworth could be next on their wish list.
