NewcastleWorld editor Liam Kennedy and writer Jordan Cronin provide their verdict on the latest transfer rumours surrounding Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United.

Adam Webster

LK: “In top form for Brighton at the moment and it would be a strange one if they let him go. Can’t see it personally.”

JC: “I don’t doubt that Newcastle have enquired about Webster, but I find it hard to believe that Brighton would sell. Graham Potter’s side paid £20m for the in-form defender, and naturally, they’d want to profit. Seems unrealistic from the outside looking in.”

Rogerio

LK: “A player on United’s scouting radar for the last 18 months. While this is the case, it’s yet more noise from Italy drumming up this supposed interest. And reports from Italy should always be taken with a pinch of salt.

JC: “Has been linked with Newcastle previously, with reports he was close to moving to St James’ Park in 2020. While he could well be a target again, United have other positions to focus on first, not least a central defender.”

Nat Phillips

LK: “Not for me, but I think he is a player who is on the United radar. I genuinely don’t see him as a level of player Newcastle should be targeting, but it seems like they are.”

JC: “Having been left frustrated in their pursuit of Diego Carlos and Sven Botman, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Newcastle’s search lead them to Phillips. The player is available and his price tag is relatively low in comparison.”

Bernd Leno

LK: “I like the sound of this one. A top class goalkeeper who maybe hasn’t shown his best during his time at Arsenal. I think my first choice would be to go for Manchester United’s Dean Henderson, but Leno, a seasoned Premier League and international performer, would be an excellent choice to come in and pressure Martin Dubravka.”

JC: “There has been a lot of debate around Dubravka but his performance at Leeds will have silenced a few critics. I just don’t see Newcastle signing a goalkeeper this month. Could be wrong, of course.”

Matt Targett

LK: “Would be a very shrewd addition on the left. Like the player a lot - so too did one of Newcastle’s previous managers Rafa Benitez. Thing is, I’m not sure Aston Villa will be willing sellers - and that’s the last thing NUFC need right now.”

JC: “Not a transfer link I’ve heard. But again, a position that may be filled if and when more signings arrive.”
