Great North Run 2021: 10 best photos as thousands of runners did the North East proud

The Great North Run got underway on Sunday (12 September) for the 40th edition of the historic race, filling the streets of Newcastle with thousands of runners once again.

The 2020 edition of the race was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. Over 50,000 runners lined up for the comeback event, with the traditional Men’s Women’s and Wheelchair races also taking place.

Britain’s Marc Scott won the men’s race and Kenya’s Hellen Obiri triumphed in a thrilling finish to the women’s event.

Sean Frame won the men’s wheelchair title for the first time with fellow Brit and six-time winner Shelly Woods, 35, winning the women’s.

Here are some of the best photos from the 40th running of the Great North Run.
