"I used to travel to Athens and now can't" - We asked where you would like to see new routes from Newcastle Airport

Newcastle airport is regularly announcing new routes to keep North East residents using the region’s largest airport, and while we can get to a huge number of destinations from the site to the north west of the city centre, there are always more palces to explore across the world.

To kick off 2025 we listed all the new routes kicking off this year to sites across Europe and beyond including the Channel Islands, Copenhagen and Berlin.

Following this, our readers over on Facebook offered suggestions on where they would like to be able to reach from the North East.

Some longed for routes which have now come to an end, such as Kathryn Clark, who said: “ What’s happened to Aegean Airlines?

“I travelled with them to Athens from Newcastle several times but this year they aren’t using Newcastle so I’m having to fly from Edinburgh. It’s crazy not being able to fly from your local airport. Before Aegean came to Newcastle I was flying to Heathrow then into Athens.”

Others are hoping for better domestic options. “Flights to isle of man should be reinstated. The nearest at present is Manchester, Liverpool and ferry again” said Stu Withey, while Ian Kelsey said he “used to like the flight to Stansted for games in London.”

Newcastle United matchday options were also on the mind of Pamela Andison, who asked “Any chance of Ireland West Knock to NCL for all the Toon fans in West of Ireland?”

“[I] would love to see flights to Ireland West airport Knock. Ryanair and Aer Lingus take note!” added Mary Cresham, who is also looking for better options across the Irish Sea.

Other suggestions included Brno in Czechia, Sardinia in Italy and Spanish capital Madrid.

Looking further afield, Stuart Cowan said: “Shame [there are] no direct flights are available to JFK instead of changing planes in London.”
