With Halloween just a week away, there’s something spooky in the air around Newcastle.

For some, this time of year is the perfect moment to hide away from ghastly Geordie ghouls, and for others, it’s time to come out and play.

For those wanting to embrace the Halloween spirit and raise their heart rates, there’s plenty going on in and around Newcastle.

Here are five of the best ghost walks in Newcastle and surrounding areas.

Newcastle Castle Keep Ghost Hunt

Newcastle’s Castle Keep was once used as a dark and dingy prison, so you can imagine the ghosts that might be hanging around here.

Small groups can explore the castle to peer into its dark rooms, including the King’s Chamber, the Great Hall, the Chapel and the Dungeons.

Keep your eyes and ears out for the growling sounds and shady black figures that paranormal investigators have spotted over the years.

Victoria Tunnels

The Victoria Tunnels were initially opened in 1842 to transport coal from the Spital Tongues colliery down to the river.

It was then eerily abandoned for 80 years and later become an air raid shelter during World War II.

The hidden underground corridor is known for its strange lights and mists.

This walk is a bit more tricky underfoot though, and might not be suitable for those with mobility issues.

Dunstanburgh Castle Ghost Walk

For nature fans, you can take part in the Dunstanburgh Ghost Walk while immersed in a stunning and isolated location.

You won’t be alone either - there’s a 16th-century knight who is said to still roam the castle’s regions, so look out as you enjoy the views of the Northumberland Coast.

This walk is suitable for dogs too, so take along your furry friend who can bark off any 600-year-old knights.

Kielder Castle

The Kielder Castle tour gives guests who are brave enough the chance to camp outside the 18th-century building.

Before that, ghost fans can investigate the castle’s dark rooms and surrounding forest.

Word is that there’s an evanescent lady spotted by many ghost hunters in the mansion.

Newcastle Witchery Tour

The year in 1649 and unjust witch trials are rife.

On the Newcastle Witchery Tour, you’ll be transported back to that time and hear all the ghastly witch stories.

They say you’ll never be able to see the Quayside’s pebble alleyways the same after this tour.
