Unlike many venues across the city such as Boiler Shop and the (now lost) Riverside, the venue on the corner of Northumberland Road and College Street has always been used as a space for live music, meaning it has a long, storied history.
Opened in 1927, the site is now nearly 100 years old. It was part of a development which included the Newcastle City Baths and became the city’s first dedicated music venue soon after the ribbon was cut, in part thanks to an organ which was put in place a year after the opening year.

“It always was, and will be, my favourite NE music venue” said Kev Hill. Despite seeing the likes of Paul Weller, The Who, Black Sabbath, Thin Lizzy and more at the site, he said “my favourite nights were seeing The Faces with their Laddish, Feel Good, Boozy atmosphere - their music was sometimes sloppy but the occasions remain memorable!”
Hilary Lamming added: “This is my favourite venue! Lindisfarne on a Christmas Eve and Slade definitely my favourite - my ears actually hurt thinking of it!”

Brian Thompson agreed, saying his favourite memory was “playing the fiddle in a Durham County Youth Orchestra Concert, early 60s, after a couple of crafty halves in the Northumberland Arms between rehearsal and concert, like good musicians!”
