NX Newcastle: What is the new city centre venue, when does it open and who is performing there in the opening months?

Newcastle’s newest music venue will be opening soon and here’s all you need to know.

The O2 Academy was the home of middle to large sized artists when they hit the North East as part of UK, European or world tours and its replacement will be opening this month.

NX will be Newcastle's newest music venue and take the space of the old Academy site after months of renovations to the building on the corner of Westgate Road and Clayton Street.

    Taking over the old Academy site, NX will be a music and club venue which claims to put the music fan and artist at the front and centre of the musical experience.

    It is owned by the same group as other venues SWX in Bristol and South London’s Electric Brixton.

    When does the new NX venue in Newcastle open?

    The venue’s launch party will be happening on Friday, September 23 and will be a club night where duo A1 X J1 will make an appearance.

    Its first live concert will come from German electronicore six piece Electric Callboy. This will be on the following day, Saturday September 24.

    How can I get to NX Newcastle?

    Thanks to its central location, the venue is a very short walk from Newcastle Central Station and its joining Metro stop.

    The 71, 72 and 87 buses stop directly outside on Westgate Road and other bus stops across the city centre are just a matter of minutes away.

    What shows and gigs is NX Newcastle hosting in its opening weeks and months?

    The venue is already hosting a packed calendar of shows and events throughout the rest of this year. In its opening week it will be hosting a couple of events for Newcastle University’s freshers’ week including a DJ set from Charlie Sloth.

    Weekly club nights are expected to become a regular occurance too with Subfocus and DJ Fresh playing confirmed slots throughout the venue's opening weeks.

    The site also has live music in abundance. As well as Electric Callboy, NX is hosting gigs from indie icons The Wombats, local wonderkid Andrew Cushin as well as names as diverse as Black Midi, James Bay and Deaf Havana.

    Beabadoobee, who supported Sam Fender at his summer Finsbury Park show, is also lined up to play.
