The call and response in theatres across Newcastle has already begun as Pantomime season is in full swing for 2022. The tradition dates back to 17th Century Italy, where trained actors travelled from province to province in Italy and then France, improvising and telling comedic stories that held lessons for the crowd, changing the main character depending on where they were performing to remain topical.
Such is the history of pantomime in the theatre that one of the stage’s most respected actors, Sir Ian McKellen, was quick to defend the artform upon news he would be touring the pantomime Mother Goose in 2022. “It uses every device theatre can offer” McKellen told The Independent upon the announcement of a tour. “There is singing, there is dancing, there is rhyme, there are jokes, there is sentiment, there is audience participation, there is a man dressed as a woman, a woman dressed as a goose.

Newcastle’s pantomime season this year includes some of the usual suspects you would see during this time of the year; from Cinderella at the Theatre Royal, including a relaxed performance for those who are neurodiverse, their carers and parents, to not one but two Aladdin performances on the Black and White and Red and White parts of the Tyne and Wear.
Newcastleworld is here to bring you the current performance dates of Pantomimes in Newcastle and the surrounding areas; the list does not cover amateur dramatic performances or community theatre group performances however.
