‘Energetic’ ABBA smash hit musical Mamma Mia strikes just the right note as steamy ‘summer soundtrack’

The hit musical Mamma Mia is running this week at the Sunderland Empire - and Amy Kennedy gives her take on the ABBA-themed classic.

With temperatures soaring, there couldn’t be a more fitting show to quench your thirst for a feel-good, ABBA-fuelled sing-along.

Described as the world’s sunniest and most exhilarating smash-hit musical, Mamma Mia is a heart-warming tale of young bride-to-be Sophie’s quest to uncover her real father.

Unbeknown to her mother Donna, Sophie has uncovered an old diary which holds the secrets of three summer romances – one of which led to her birth.

Sophie takes fate into her own hands and invites all three potential fathers to her upcoming wedding at their Greek home, and what unfolds after makes for hilarious viewing.

ABBA songs provide the perfect soundtrack to this story of love, friendship and identity, as the cast take the audience on a journey its unlikely to forget for some time.

Donna is played by the fabulous Sara Poyzer, who has many a stage, TV, film and radio credits to her name.

She plays the role with all the energy, confidence, and chaos you’d expect from the lovable Donna Sheridan, while still managing to bring the audience to tears during her emotional rendition of “Slipping Through My Fingers”.

The set is simple yet effective as the cast seamlessly adjust the two white-washed walls against a sea blue backdrop to set the scene perfectly for all the shenanigans in Donna’s Greek home, Sophie’s hen do and, finally, the wedding everyone’s been waiting for!

MAMMA MIA! is currently running at Sunderland Empire’s stage until Saturday, July 16, 2022. Tickets priced from just £13 are available from the Ticket Centre on 0844 871 761 or online at www.ATGtickets.com/sunderland
