Following a year away, Newcastle’s official Christmas light switch on is back with a bang. The event in the city centre is a big deal and the crowds are always large, but which roads will close to make way for the event on 11 November?

According to a document on Newcastle City Council’s website, some city centre roads will be closed from 11:00am while the lights are secured and the stage is put in place with further city centre roads closed throughout the evening for the event itself.

This year’s Christmas light switch on is occurring on Thursday 11 November on Grey Street with crowds potentially reaching Grey’s Monument as families flock to the area to make up for the postponed in-person event last year.

The event, which is being hosted by Metro Radio, with the Lord Mayor and a series of panto stars set to begin Christmas in the city.

Which roads will be closed throughout the day?

Newcastle City Council are saying all the work for the event will be undertaken on the day of the event, with the entirety of Hood Street closed from 11:00am until 9:00pm.

Grey Street will be closed between Blackett Street and Market Street from 5:00pm until 8:00pm with all of Blackett Street also closing for the three hour stretch while the celebrations occur.

Grainger Street will also be inaccessible to traffic between 5:00pm and 8:00pm between Nelson Street and Blackett Street while organisers wait for the crowds to clear.
