We all love a trip to the coast, but the first sunny days of the year can see beaches along the North East coast packed.

So whether you’re looking for a new spot to walk the dog or simply spend some time in nature after a long winter, take a look at these options across Tyne and Wear.

5. Backhouse Park
Not as manicured as Mowbray Park or Barnes Park, but Backhouse Park has a more rural, escapist feel. Thomas William Backhouse gifted the park, formerly Ashburne Park, to the Corporation of Sunderland in 1922 who named it Backhouse Park. Photo: Katy Wheeler

6. Saltwell Park
One of the ten most popular parks in the UK, Saltwell Park is nestled away in the heart of Gateshead and is one of the finest examples of a traditional Victorian park | Gateshead Council

7. Herrington Country Park
Sunderland's largest park covers around 320 acres and includes some stunning views of the surrounding countryside as well as one of the best cafes in the city thanks to Love Lily. To extend the visit why not take a trip up Penshaw Monument? | Sunderland City Council

8. Whitburn Point and Souter Lighthouse
While it is on the coast, the lack of beach means plenty of people skip this part of our amazing stretch of land. Perfect for walks, the stretch from the southern tip of South Shields to Whitburn offers clifftop views, open green spaces, a nature reserve and the Souter Lighthouse cafe. | sg
