Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson’s future on Tyneside is far from clear.
The 32-year-old England international made a goalscoring return to the Newcastle starting line-up on Saturday, netting the second goal in a 3-2 win over Birmingham City in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.

He said: “I don't see a huge number of strikers in world football that can do what Callum can do. The big thing for us is, can we keep him fit, keep him on the pitch? And then there's no doubting his ability.”
But, despite his obvious ability - his 49 goals in less than 100 games proves his class - Wilson has only managed 97 games in five years at St James’ Park. All too often when the Magpies have needed their No.9, he’s not been there to help. Ever since he edged into his 30s, the player has simply been unable to shake injuries.
Howe’s contract conundrum
That leaves head coach Howe with a bit of a conundrum. He knows he has Alexander Isak as his main man - little other than a sale will change that fact - but he does need an able deputy.

And, conveniently, Wilson’s Magpies deal is also up for renewal in the summer, leaving the player and the club at a crossroads. Give the player a new deal, even though he’s on high wages, and roll the dice again for another season. Or, allow Wilson to depart for pastures new and find a fitter, more reliably available understudy to Isak.
Leeds United show ‘interest’
It’s being reported that Leeds United are the latest club to show an interest in Wilson, who turns 33 later this month.
The Whites are top of the Championship table, and no doubt adding a player of Wilson’s capability in the summer would certainly boost their chances of staying up, which is something they were unable to do for too long after promotion last time out.
Premier League West Ham United are also thought to be monitoring the situation.
