We all know Newcastle is home to some of the best things about the UK, but what is your favourite?

As the North East’s largest city and England’s most prominent northernmost city, Newcastle has an amazing history and unique culture.

We took to social media to ask our readers what the best thing to come out of the city was, and, once we took away all the people suggesting themselves, we took the best options.

These are reader’s opinions on the best thing to come out of Newcastle down the years.

Some took a look back into the past, with David Henshaw suggesting the “many wonderful ships” which have come from the banks of the Tyne down the years thanks to the region’s iconic shipbuilding history.

Food and drink were also hugely popular options, with Iain Hickson and Ryan Watson claiming the city’s top export are Newcastle Brown Ale and stotties respectively. Watson also suggested Lucozade, which was originally invented by pharmacist William Walker Hunter on Tyneside.

Tom Gibson suggested the music which the city has given us down the years, while Laurie Dodds added Sting, who was born in Wallsend and British Invasion band The Animals who formed in the city.

Elsewhere, Thomas Richardson said St James Park and, taking another look into the past, Graeme Snadden added the suggestion of coal, which built mining communities across the North East down the years.

Lorraine Rankin added the city’s iconic accent with Susan Fletcher suggesting the people themselves, which always give visitors a friendly welcome - this was amplified by Neil Smith’s suggestion of “millions of Geordies!”
