Newcastle United supporters already believe Yankuba Minteh would improve Eddie Howe’s side following his stunning brace against Ajax. Toon chiefs stumped up £7million to lure the 19-year-old from Odense Boldklub last summer. Minteh was immediately loaned out to Dutch giants Feyenoord where he has emerged as a top talent in the Eredivisie.

Two goals and an assist helped Feyenoord record an emphatic 6-0 win in De Klassieker. PSV Eindhoven are nine points clear, losing just one game all season, but Minteh’s team comfortably sit second.

Those heroics took the Gambian international to 10 for the campaign across all competitions. With the right flank proving a problem area for Newcastle in recent times, fans have called upon Howe to give Minteh a chance next season.

One fan called the winger “the future” after being left starstruck by his brace against Ajax. The first goal was a first-time shot with his root foot, with the second a left-footed curler from outside the box.

“Watching Minteh again,” one fan posted. “He bullied the defender, won the ball back, got an assist then, two minutes later, started the move and ended it with a cool right-footed finish. Fast, strong, low centre of gravity (and a) wicked left foot. Under Howe, he is the future.”

Another agreed, highlighting how his ability with both feet could give him the edge over Miguel Almiron. He wrote: “(It is) really nice to see him score with his right foot. He seems to be able to use both feet and (is) not left-foot dominant.”

However, one supporter preferred to err on the side of caution. Newcastle have signed a mixed bag of players from the Eredivisie, with Minteh yet to test his skills at the highest level.

“Bit of a statement that,” the concerned tweet read. “He’s played well in the Dutch league but so did (Siem) De Jong. We’d only be able to answer your question if he were playing at the same standard.”
