The summer holidays are almost over for teenagers in England and an increasing number will be heading back to the classroom with a Covid vaccine in their arm. Despite more than 78 per cent of the UK’s adult population now being fully vaccinated against coronavirus, the roll-out is still in the early stages for under-18s.

Vaccination opened for those aged 16 and 17 three weeks ago, while for those aged 12 to 15 only those at higher risk or who live with someone with a suppressed immune system are getting jabbed.

How many under 18s have been vaccinated in England as a whole?

Across England, 521,192 under 18s had had at least one vaccine dose as of 22 August, according to NHS England figures, representing 13.7 per cent of 12 to 17 year olds. Of those, more than half (280,322) have been jabbed in the last three weeks. Just 6.3 per cent of under 18s had been vaccinated as of 1 August.

But vaccination rates vary massively across the country.

In Allerdale, in Cumbria, more than a quarter (25.3 per cent) have been jabbed. In other areas, coverage is trailing at less than 3 per cent.

How does Tyne and Wear compare?

Across the five authorities that make up Tyne and Wear, 11,735 under 18s have been vaccinated –16 per cent of 12 to 17 year olds. The figures use mid-2019 population estimates from the Office for National Statistics.
