300 solar panels likely to be installed around Gateshead Leisure Centre
Gateshead Council’s planning and development committee is set to decide on an application to install 300 solar panels on land adjacent to the fitness centre on Dunston Hill. Earlier reports into the prospective scheme stated the work will make the facility more carbon efficient and help contribute to the council’s 2030 net-zero targets.
A design report, compiled by Gradon Architecture stated: “The works aim to save the venue significant sums in running costs whilst also meeting carbon emissions commitments. This application covering the PV array aims to offset some of the running costs of the new Air Source Heat pump equipment.”

The plans form part of a £3.7m contract to de-carbonise both Dunston Leisure and Blaydon Primary Care Centre. The council’s plans for Dunston Leisure have generated 21 objections, ranging from concerns over lost parking, noise, and the potential environmental impact of the scheme.
However, the council’s report into the plans state: “The proposed development aligns with national and local policies supporting renewable energy while minimising impacts. The proposal does not cause unacceptable harm to residential amenity, visual character, ecology, transport, or land conditions.”
The report also states that any excess electricity generated that is not used directly by the leisure centre will be supplied back to the National Grid.
