The people of Newcastle are scrambling to source their Covid booster jabs in time for Christmas as the new Omicron variant runs rampant.

The number of new cases in the city is at its highest this year with 68,000 positive tests coming in on December 15.

It is thought that while protection weakens against the ultra-transmissible mutation with two jabs, having a booster improves this dramatically.

Prime minister Boris Johnson said everyone aged over 18 in England will be offered booster jabs from this week, in an announcement aired on television on Sunday night.

The prime minister said extra vaccine sites and mobile units would be set up across England, and opening hours extended.

He said: “At this point our scientists cannot say that Omicron is less severe.

“And even if that proved to be true, we already know it is so much more transmissible that a wave of Omicron through a population that was not boosted would risk a level of hospitalisation that could overwhelm our NHS and lead sadly to very many deaths.”

Across Newcastle, a number of pharmacies, hospitals and clinics are offering walk-in booster jabs.

On the NHS website, this morning (December 16) it says you can get a walk-in booster dose if it’s been three months since your second dose and:

  • aged 18 years old or over.
  • aged 16 years old or over with a health condition that puts you at high risk from Covid-19.

You will have to face a longer queue at a walk-in centre, but as NewcastleWorld found yesterday, they are moving quickly with staff vaccinating someone every 90 seconds.
